The Department of Hotel Management was established in October, 2009 with the endorsement of the Chinese Ministry of Education, and started to enroll students in September 2010. Its predecessor is the Study of Hotel Management under the Department of Tourism Management. It is one of the earliest undergraduate field of study as well as the only discipline offered by a private institution of higher education then in Shanghai. The study of hotel management was expanded and upgraded to the Department of Hotel Management after the establishment of School of Tourism and Hotel Management at Sanda.  At present, the total student enrollment of the Department is about 500.   

The Department of Hotel Management at Shanghai Sanda University has been designated as a secondary education–undergraduate higher education articulation pilot project as well as an application-oriented undergraduate development pilot project.

The goal of the Department of Hotel Management is to cultivate high-caliber, application-oriented, professional personnel with all-rounded knowledge and skills who possess higher modern management theories, better quality of humanities, solid professional knowledge of management, good global perspectives, awareness of creation and innovation, entrepreneurial spirit, strong social responsibility, and capabilities needed by highly rated hotels and related enterprises and institutions to engage in management positions, based on the characteristics of talent demand by hotel industry. 

The main core courses offered by the department include Modern International Hotel Industry, Introduction to Hotel Management, Hotel Lobby and Guest Room Management, Hotel Catering Services and Management, Hotel Marketing Management, and Hotel Financial Management.  The independent practice Courses include Coffee and Wine Culture, Tea Art and Tea Culture and others.

At present, the Department has a Hotel Management Professional Experimental Teaching /Learning Center based on the concept of combination of knowledge with practice. The center is built following the standard and settings of a real hotel, with 85 guest rooms, kitchen, restaurant, bar, tea culture display, wine culture display and others to make it a multifunctional facility for faculty and students to teach, learn and practice all-in-one place. The Department has also set up more than 40 off-campus teaching/learning/practice bases in Shanghai including Shanghai Portman Ritz-Carlton Hotel and Shanghai Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

The Department of Hotel Management worked hand-in-hand with the Marriott Group to establish the Shanghai Sanda University - Marriott School of Hotel Management in 2018, It also worked with the International Butler Academy (Netherlands) to launch the first undergraduate degree for line of study of senior butler training in China, cultivating and training butlers to become senior management talented personnel with high professional qualities, systematic butler service knowledge and professional skills.

The employment positions targeted for the graduating students from the Department of Hotel Management are managerial or related service jobs at highly rated high-end hotels both in China and in the world. The employment rate has exceeded 97.5% for the past three consecutive years.


Hotel Management (Butler)

The Hotel Management (Senior Butler) is the first undergraduate degree of line of study in China, offering international butler courses. The School started to recruit students in 2014 and enrolls 30 undergraduate students every year.

Students majoring in hotel management (Senior Butler) will take Senior Butler courses and receive training by senior lecturers from the International Butler Institute in the Netherlands, in addition to the main courses of Hotel Management.  The students who successfully pass the final examination will obtain an International Butler Certificate in China which is internationally recognized.

The education objective of Hotel Management (Senior Butler) is to enable students to master the basic theoretical knowledge and skills of tourism and hotel management, obtain strong ability of using foreign languages and computer application, broaden their international perspectives, possess high professional qualities, systematic butler service knowledge and professional skills, and become senior management talented personnel.

The main core courses offered by the department include Modern International Hotel Industry, Introduction to Hotel Management, Hotel Marketing Management, Hotel Financial Management, Hotel Lobby and Guest Room Management, Housekeeping Management, Dining Table Management, Employee Management, Cooking Management, Housekeeper Literacy, International Business Etiquette, Project and Time Management, and others.

Employment direction: senior reception and service personnel of government agencies, senior service management personnel of foreign-related departments of enterprises and institutions, high-star hotels, clubs, private estates, yachts, high-end properties, etc.
